Deputy Chief of Mission of US Embassy in Yangon returns to strengthen engagement with Myanmar people

The US Embassy in Yangon has announced that the Deputy Chief of Mission, Doug Sonnek, has returned to Myanmar to enhance US engagement with the people of Myanmar.

“We welcome Deputy Chief of Mission, Doug Sonnek, to Myanmar to enhance the United States’ engagement with the people of Myanmar,” the US Embassy said in a statement.

Doug Sonnek, a senior US government official, has served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Yangon since September 11, 2025.

He led the US Embassy’s Political and Economic Affairs Section in Yangon during a period of rapid change in US-Myanmar relations from 2011 to 2014.

Prior to his arrival in Myanmar, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Colombo and as Deputy Economic Counselor at the US Embassy in Canberra, Australia.
