Ma Moe San Suu Kyi, the daughter of former Rakhine State Prime Minister U Nyi Pu, was sentenced to another five years in prison by a junta court on July 6, 2026.
Ma Moe San Suu Kyi is a central youth officer for the National League for Democracy (NLD) party. Military authorities originally arrested her on May 9, 2021, at an apartment in Yangon's Kamayut Township following the military coup.
She was initially sentenced to six years in prison. Her charges included state defamation under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code and unlawful association under Section 17(1).
During her initial terms, authorities transferred her from Yangon's Insein Prison to Thayarwaddy Prison on June 9, 2023.
Although her original prison sentence was scheduled to end in August 2025, the military regime refused to release her. On August 7, 2025, the Thayarwaddy Township police chief temporarily removed her from prison for an interrogation before returning her to her cell later that evening.
Following an additional investigation by the Kamayut police station, the Kamayut Township Court in Yangon handed down the new five-year sentence under Section 52(a) of the Anti-Terrorism Law.
Her father, former Rakhine State Prime Minister U Nyi Pu, was also arrested during the 2021 military coup. He remains in prison serving a lengthy sentence.
