Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (8,302) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

A total of (31,815) people have been arrested by the junta for opposing their arbitrary seizure of power. Of those arrested, (14,738) are confirmed to still be in detention, while (7,867) remain to be verified.

These are the numbers reported by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

The basic human rights of inmates in prisons across the country, including their right to life, are being violated on a daily basis. A political prisoner named Chit Ko Win (aka Thaung Gyi) who was suffering from leukemia was not given adequate medical treatment and died in Katha Prison this August. It is one of the incidents that highlights the oppression and the denial of access to medical treatment in prisons by the junta.

In addition, the junta has been carrying out daily aerial bombardments targeting religious buildings and civilians. On August 19, an aerial bombing was conducted on a monastery in Hpaw Hta Village, Hpapun Township, Kayin State, killing an abbot there. Similarly, on August 21, an aerial bombing on a monastery in Swea Lwe Oe Village, Myaung Township, Sagaing Region, killed at least 10 civilians, including the abbot, according to information on the ground.
