Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (8,025) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
A total of (30,936) people have been arrested by the junta for opposing their arbitrary seizure of power. Of those arrested, (14,184) are confirmed to still be in detention, while (7,874) remain to be verified.
These are the numbers verified by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to the data collected by AAPP, from January 1 to May 6, 2026, (17) people in total; (5) women and (12) men, were killed by the junta’s gunfire across the country, including (3) children under the age of 18. These are the numbers that have been verified. Among the (17) deceased, Bago Region records the highest number of fatalities, with (5) people killed. (4) were killed in Magway Region. During the stated period in that region, the AAPP has also received information regarding the death of (44) civilians, as a result of the junta’s gunfire, whose identities have yet to be confirmed.
On May 1, at around 12:00 p.m., a junta force made up of approximately 200 combined troops launched an offensive into villages in Salin Township, Magway Region. When the military column reached Hta Naung Kone Village, they shot and killed a villager, Maung Oo, and set fire to residential houses. As a result, an unidentified elderly woman who was unable to flee the village was burned to death in the fire.
