Date – 16 March 2026
Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (7,893) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
Since the coup, a total of (30,640) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (22,436) are currently in detention, (11,286) of whom are serving sentences.
These are the numbers verified by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
Detained political prisoners across the country are systematically denied the full rights that should be afforded to prisoners and continue to face various forms of oppression. The death toll continues to increase in prisons, particularly as a result of the lack of adequate healthcare. Win Myint Soe was arrested for participating in political movements opposing the junta. While serving his sentence at Kale Prison in Sagaing Region, he suffered severely from cirrhosis of the liver and ascites. He died on March 13, 2026, while receiving medical treatment at Kale General Hospital. His body was not handed over to his family members. He was cremated on March 15 at Kanpale Cemetery in Kale under the arrangement of the junta.
Moreover, according to information gathered from the ground, the junta continues to target civilians, committing human rights abuses against them on a daily basis. On March 10, an airstrike was carried out on Zee Kone Village in Tilin Township, Sagaing Region. The bombs exploded within the compound of a monastery and the bomb shrapnel killed a total of ten people, including monks and novices. On March 11, an aerial bombing took place from a paramotor onto Inn Ba Lar Village in Shwegyin Township, Bago Region, resulting in the death of six civilians.
