Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 4 February 2026


Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (7,747) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.


Since the coup, a total of (30,397) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (22,793) are currently in detention, (11,522) of whom are serving sentences.


These are the numbers verified by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.


According to the data collected by the AAPP, from January 1, 2025 to January 31, 2026, the junta killed (233) people in total in various ways after being detained across the country; (38) women and (195) men. (9) of these individuals were set on fire following their arrest and consequent death. The identities of these victims have been verified. Among them, Mandalay Region recorded the highest number of fatalities, totaling (71) people, followed by (66) killed in Magway Region.


On January 25, 2026, San Maung and his son Naing Linn Maung from San Kone Village, Nat Mauk Township, Magway Region, were on their way to a wedding, when a military column of junta forces entered the village and arrested them. The junta forces took them to a tent in a palm grove, where they were killed and their bodies burned.
