Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (7,723) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
Since the coup, a total of (30,328) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (22,750) are currently in detention, (11,488) of whom are serving sentences.
These are the numbers verified by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
Political prisoners in prisons across the country are not only deprived of their rights as prisoners, but also face various forms of oppression. Political prisoners in Myingyan Prison, Mandalay Region, do not receive adequate health care or nutritious food, and limitations are imposed on the parcels sent by their families. Moreover, some prison authorities discriminate against political prisoners and reportedly engage in torture. In addition, political prisoners are ordered to clean prison wards, and if they refuse to work, they are forced to make monthly payments. They are also required to pay for diesel to [run the water motor used to supply] water in the prison. Similarly, in Kale Prison, Sagaing Region, prison staff are reportedly taking bribes and exploiting inmates.
In Insein Prison, Yangon Region, some ward officers, citing ward rules as a pretext, have been oppressing political prisoners and engaging in corruption. In addition, newly arrived inmates are reportedly asked for money under various pretexts, and those who cannot pay are beaten, subjected to forced labor, or relocated to different cells.
