Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 22 January 2026


Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (7,705) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.


Since the coup, a total of (30,317) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (22,740) are currently in detention, (11,477) of whom are serving sentences.


These are the numbers verified by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.


According to the data collected by AAPP, from January 1, 2025 to January 22, 2026, (108) people in total; (20) women and (88) men, were killed by the junta’s gunfire across the country, including (8) children under the age of 18. These are the numbers that have been verified. Among the (108) deceased, Magway Region and Sagaing Region recorded the highest number of fatalities, with (26) people killed in each region. (15) were killed in Bago Region.


On January 20, at approximately 7 p.m., Khin Wine from Aye Chan Thar Yar Ward, War Boe Kone Village, Kyainseikgyi Township, Kayin State, was extracting rubber in a rubber plantation when she was shot dead by Infantry Battalion No. (284) (IB-284) from the junta forces.
