Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (7,690) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
Since the coup, a total of (30,291) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (22,735) are currently in detention, (11,474) of whom are serving sentences.
These are the numbers verified by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to the data collected by AAPP, from January 1 to December 31, 2025, (98) people in total died in formal detention facilities across the country; (8) men in interrogation, (3) men in police stations, and (25) women and (62) men in prisons. These are numbers that have been verified.
Nyan Min Tun, a native of Pyapon Township, Ayeyarwady Region, had been arrested and served a sentence under Section 49(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law in 2023. On June 14, 2025, 12 political prisoners in Hpa-An Prison, Hpa-An Township, Kayin State, complained to the Superintendent during his inspection that they were being malnourished due to problems with the food provided, and that they were being forced to work. In response, the prison staff shackled their legs, connected with iron rods and placed them in solitary confinement. On July 13, 2025, the iron rods were removed, but the prisoners were beaten and tortured while still in leg shackles. As a result, Nyan Min Tun died, and two other political prisoners were seriously injured.
