Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 15 January 2026


Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (7,688) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.


Since the coup, a total of (30,286) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (22,730) are currently in detention, (11,469) of whom are serving sentences.


These are the numbers verified by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.


According to the data collected by AAPP, from January 1, 2025 to January 15, 2026 a total of (224) people; (107) women and (117) men, were killed by the junta’s artillery strikes across the country, including (45) children under the age of 18. These are the numbers that have been verified. Among the (224) deaths, Sagaing Region records the highest number of fatalities with (35) victims. (32) were killed in Magway Region. During the stated period, the AAPP has also received information regarding the death of (205) civilians, as a result of junta’s artillery strikes, whose identities have yet to be confirmed.


On the morning of January 11, junta forces stationed at the Yangtse Copper Mining Company in Salingyi Township, Sagaing Region, launched an offensive into War Tan Village, firing heavy weaponry. During the attack, Thein Zaw, a worker from the security department of the mining company who had joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), was instantly killed when struck by artillery shrapnel.
