Civil society groups accuse ICRC of complicity in regime propaganda following Aung San Suu Kyi visit

A coalition of 155 Myanmar, regional, and international civil society organizations (CSOs) issued a joint open letter to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Tuesday, condemning the humanitarian agency for allowing its Aug. 3 meeting with jailed State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi to be exploited for military regime propaganda.

The signatories accused the ICRC of compromising its operational principles by remaining silent while the regime in Naypyidaw weaponized the visit by ICRC resident representative Arnaud de Baecque to project an illusion of legitimacy and normalcy to ASEAN and the broader international community.
