Chinese President Xi Jinping invites Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing for first state visit to China as ‘president’

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced on Friday that, at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Min Aung Hlaing will pay a state visit to China from 15 to 19 June.

Based on official records of his travel since taking on the role of “president” following the 2026 political transition, Min Aung Hlaing has not made any official visits to China prior to this upcoming trip.

By hosting this formal state visit, Beijing is showing clear political support for Myanmar’s restructured government in the wake of the recent “sham” elections.

Political analysts expect the two leaders to discuss China’s influence over ethnic armed organizations along the northern border. Min Aung Hlaing is likely to ask Beijing for help in enforcing ceasefires to stop the loss of military-held territory.

They are also expected to discuss economic projects under the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor and the Belt and Road Initiative, including the Kyaukphyu Deep Sea Port in Rakhine State and cross-border railways. Talks will likely cover reopening border trade gates closed by the fighting and securing oil and gas pipelines running into Yunnan Province.

On security matters, Beijing is expected to push for stricter commitments and coordinated joint operations to completely eradicate the remaining cyber-scam complexes operating in border areas, an issue that remains a top priority for Chinese domestic security.

Meanwhile, Myanmar officials have not yet released any statements regarding the upcoming trip.
