Britain, US, Australia call for release of Suu Kyi, other political prisoners

The British, US and Australian embassies in Myanmar recently issued a joint appeal for an immediate release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other people detained arbitrarily.

The coordinated statement followed the recent release of several political prisoners, including former President U Win Myint and filmmaker Shin Daewe, who were pardoned by junta leader Min Aung Hlaing on 17 April to mark the Burmese New Year.

Welcoming the release of U Win Myint, who was unlawfully detained since the February 2021 coup, the Australian embassy emphasized that many others remain behind bars. The embassy further called for a ‘commitment to genuine and inclusive dialogue’, an end to violence against civilians, and an unhindered humanitarian access.

“Australia stands ready to support genuine efforts to alleviate suffering and find a lasting solution to the ongoing crisis,” said the statement, reaffirming support for ASEAN’s central role in the Myanmar peace process.

Sharing similar sentiment, the US embassy pledged to continue its advocacy for those still imprisoned. “The United States will continue to advocate for the release of all political prisoners and support the peace and stability process in Myanmar,” stated the embassy.

British Ambassador Andrew Jackson also acknowledged the recent releases but expressed concern for the thousands, still in jails. He urged the military junta to immediately release Suu Kyi and other unjustly detained individuals.

“The UK government will continue to support the peaceful, democratic future that the people of Myanmar hope for,” Jackson said, adding, “This goal requires an end to violence, full access to humanitarian aid, and an inclusive dialogue.”
