In the daily press briefing on 11 January 2022, the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General Mr. Stéphane Dujarric said in regards with Myanmar that UNICEF also condemns the killing of at least four children and the maiming of multiple others during an escalation of conflict in the past week.He mentioned that the agency is gravely concerned by the stepped-up conflict in Myanmar and condemns the reported use of air strikes and heavy weaponry in civilian areas and is particularly outraged about attacks on children.

UNICEF condemns killing of at least four children during escalation of conflict in Myanmar
On 11 January 2022, UNICEF issued a Statement condemning the killing of at least four children, and the maiming of multiple others, during an escalation of conflict over the past week in Myanmar.The Statement urged that Parties to conflict must treat the protection of children as a foremost priority and must take all steps necessary to ensure that children are kept away from fighting and that communities are not targeted, and this is required by international humanitarian law and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which Myanmar is a signatory.The Statement stated that UNICEF calls for urgent action to ensure independent investigation of these incidents, so that those responsible can be held to account.

Statement by the EU Spokesperson on the latest sentencing of State Counsellor Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi
On 11 January 2022, a special court set up by the Myanmar State Administrative Council in Naypyitaw sentenced detained State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to an additional four years‘ imprisonment.
The EU‘s position, as expressed in its Declaration of 6 December 2021 remains that the trial was politically motivated, and it represents another step towards the dismantling of the rule of law and a further blatant violation of human rights in Myanmar and yet another major setback for democracy in Myanmar since the military coup on 1 February 2021.
The EU's statement said that these proceedings are a clear attempt to exclude democratically elected leaders, including Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy, from the inclusive dialogue process called for by ASEAN‘s Five Point Consensus.

Norwegian Foreign Minister condemns sentencing of Aung San Suu Kyi
Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anniken Huitfeldt said that she condemns State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi‘s sentencing to four years in prison. The military regime is using the judicial system to silence political opponents and crush the National League for Democracy, she added.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has assailed the news of three new convictions handed down on 10 January against Myanmar‘s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee slams the verdict as 'politically motivated‘ and Norway‘s Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt believes the Security Council, in general, has failed.

Statement of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France on State Counsellor Aung San Suu
Kyi’s sentencing
On 10 January 2022, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France issued a Statement condemning the prison sentence imposed on the State Counsellor, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and it said this travesty of justice undermines this worrying political situation.
The Statement said that as underlined by the European Union and its Member States on the 6th of December, 2021, the resolution to the crisis in Myanmar requires a political dialogue involving all parties to the conflict, the immediate cessation of attacks perpetrated by the military against civilian populations as observed in Kayah, Kayin or Chin States and the unconditional release of all political prisoners detained since the 1st February, 2021.
In the Statement, it said that France continues to fully support ASEAN in order to implement the 5 points consensus, which encompasses the implementation of a broad political dialogue.

Meeks Issues Statement on the Recent Conviction and Sentencing of Aung San
Suu Kyi
On 10 January 2022, Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued a statement regarding the recent conviction and sentencing of Aung San Suu Kyi.
He condemned the fraudulent sentencing of Aung San Suu Kyi, the democratically elected State Counsellor of Burma, the politically motivated charges against her and this latest conviction are the height of farce, but Aung San Suu Kyi is just the most prominent figure that has been unjustly detained.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi commended a recent visit by Cambodian leader Hun Sen to Myanmar, which was the first by a foreign leader since the military coup in February.Japan‘s support of Cambodia‘s growing engagement with the junta since it assumed the rotating chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations signals that some U.S. allies were uneasy with shutting out Myanmar for fear this would draw the country closer to China.

ASEAN postpones foreign ministers’ meeting amid divide over Myanmar’s military rulers
Cambodia's year-long chairmanship of the ASEAN has got off to a rocky start, after it indefinitely postponed an upcoming foreign ministers' meeting amid signs of a deep divide in the bloc over the handling of Myanmar‘s military rulers.
The Cambodian foreign ministry said the January 19 retreat expected to be held in the resort town of Siem Reap had to be postponed as several ministers had difficulty attending the talks in person.
A new date for the meeting was not set.

Japan firms keep, expand business in Myanmar even after coup
About 70 percent of Japanese companies investing in Myanmar will either maintain or expand their operations in the Southeast Asian country in a year or two despite the severe hit to its economy from last year's military coup and the coronavirus pandemic, according to a Japan External Trade Organization report.

What to expect from Europe-ASEAN relations in 2022
In his end-of-year "review" for 2021, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell set a positive note on the bloc's relationship with Southeast Asian countries.
Lay Hwee Yeo, director of the EU Center in Singapore, told DW that Southeast Asia is
now a key region as the EU seeks to increase its influence in global affairs.
However, difficulties lie ahead. David Camroux, a Southeast Asia specialist at Sciences Po, noted that the Myanmar crisis will continue to be a source of strain in 2022, especially if the military junta that seized power in last year's coup continues with violence against civilians.

Myanmar teak shipments imported to U.S. despite sanctions, group says
More than 1,700 tons of teak — much of it evading economic sanctions —were exported to the United States from Myanmar after the Southeast Asian country‘s military seized power in a coup last year, a watchdog group says.
The timber trade helps finance repression and human rights abuses, according to Justice for Myanmar, an advocacy group that investigates the business dealings of the nation‘s military.

Illegal Myanmar migrants seek safety, work in Thailand
Thai authorities are continuing their crackdown on people from Myanmar entering
illegally despite a worsening humanitarian situation in the war-torn nation ruled by a military dictatorship.
Dozens of Myanmar nationals have already been detained this week alone in several Thai provinces as people from the neighboring state continue trying to cross the border illegally in search of employment and safety. However, Thai authorities have stressed that all those crossing the porous borders will be detained, charged with illegal entry and deported.

Hopeful signs: How some Southeast Asian nations are snubbing Myanmar’s military leader
In the urgent meeting in Indonesia of 10 leaders of ASEAN, in April 2021, Gen. Min Aung Hlaing — the architect of Myanmar‘s coup two months earlier — was welcomed by his soon-to-be peers. Min Aung Hlaing likely believed the international community would soon recognize his seizure of power as an irreversible fait accompli.
In October 2021 summit, barring Min Aung Hlaing delivered a significant blow to his government‘s hopes of international recognition.

No respite for Aung San Suu Kyi: Kathmandu Post
It seems there is no respite for Myanmar's ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who, having been deposed through a coup in February last year, has been sentenced to four more years in prison. The charges levelled against her sound ridiculous, to say the least, for she has been accused of, among other things, possessing unlicensed walkie-talkies and breaking Covid-19 restrictions during the 2020 election campaign. But that is how things happen in military dictatorships. There is no limit to the excesses of a military dictatorship that considers a civilian leader a threat to its legitimacy.

Last weekend, the military attacked Loikaw, Kayah state. Some 60,000 people fled the city, whose population had swelled to 90,000, seeking refuge in Shan State.

As of January 12, (1463) people are now confirmed killed by this junta coup. AAPP compiled and documented two fallen heroes today. These two fallen heroes from Kalay Township in Sagaing Region were killed on previous days and documented today. This is the number verified by AAPP.
As of January 12, a total of (8566) people are currently under detention. (601) people have been sentenced in person; of them 41 have been sentenced to death (incl. 2 children). 1966 are evading arrest warrants. 118 people have been sentenced in absentia, of them 39 sentenced to death in absentia. In total 80 sentenced to death, in person and absentia.

ဇန်န၀ါရီလ ၁၂ ရက်နေ့အထိ စစ်အာဏာသိမ်းအဖွဲ့ကြောင့် ၁၄၆၃ ဦး သေဆုံးခဲ့သည်။ စစ်ကိုင်းတိုင်း ကလေးမြို့နယ်တွင် တော်လှန်ရေးသူရဲကောင်း နှစ်ဦး ကျဆုံးခဲ့သည်။
ဇန်န၀ါရီလ ၁၂ ရက်နေ့အထိ စုစုပေါင်း ၈၅၆၆ ဦး ဖမ်းဆီးထိန်းသိမ်းခံထားရသည်။ လူပေါင်း ၆၀၁ ဦး ပြစ်ဒဏ်ချမှတ်ခဲ့ရပြီး၊ ၎င်းတို့အနက် ကလေးသူငယ် နှစ်ဦး အပါအဝင် ၄၁ ဦး သေဒဏ်ချမှတ်ခံခဲ့ရသည်။ လူပေါင်း ၁၉၆၆ ဦးသည် ဖမ်းဝရမ်းထုတ်ထားခြင်းကို ရှောင်နေရသည်။ မျက်ကွယ်တွင် ထောင်ဒဏ် ချမှတ်ခံရသူ ၁၁၈ ဦးရှိပြီး၊ ၎င်းတို့အနက် ၃၉ ဦးသည် မျက်ကွယ်တွင် သေဒဏ်ချမှတ်ခံထားရသည်။ မျက်ကွယ်နှင့် လူကိုယ်တိုင် သေဒဏ်ချမှတ် ခံထားရသူ စုစုပေါင်း ၈၀ ဦး ရှိပြီ ဖြစ်သည်။
