Body of Fisherman Shot Dead by Myanmar Army Found with Stab Wounds

The body of a fisherman killed by the military junta on a border island between Sittwe and Rathedaung townships has been recovered bearing multiple stab wounds, local sources report.

The victim, identified as 47-year-old U Nyunt Chay, was a resident of Aung Taing village in Sittwe Township. Due to ongoing conflict, he had been living as an internally displaced person (IDP) in Ma Kyi Chaung village, Rathedaung Township.

The incident occurred on August 3. A group of 11 local fishermen,consisting of nine IDPs from Aung Taing and two residents from Ma Kyi Chaung, traveled to Nantha Island in three motorized boats.

According to authorities, the group arrived at the island around 9:00 a.m. While they were eating lunch, a Honda speed boat carrying two Myanmar army soldiers and six junta-aligned Muslim militia members in civilian clothes approached the shore. The forces immediately opened fire on the unarmed fishermen.

U Nyunt Chay was killed in the attack, and his body was later discovered with distinct stab wounds. Two other fishermen from Aung Taing village, U Apu Chay (55) and U Maung Maung Tun (33), sustained injuries during the shooting. The remaining eight villagers managed to survive the assault.

The gunfire caused the fishermen to flee, leaving U Nyunt Chay lying on the shore, while U Apu Chay was shot in the left heel and U Maung Maung Tun in the right knee.

Shortly after, two junta soldiers and six Muslim soldiers towed the villagers' three fishing boats with ropes, directing them toward the Sittwe shore.

According to reports, security forces rushed to the scene to search for U Nyunt Chay. They discovered his body on the island's beach, bearing a stab wound to the right collarbone along with severe swelling and bruising across his back, chest, and face.

Arakan Army (AA) security forces later recovered U Nyunt Chay’s body, returning it in a coffin on the evening of August 3 to his family in Ma Kyi Chaung village for burial.

Meanwhile, U Apu Chay and U Maung Maung Tun, who were injured by the military's gunfire, are currently receiving medical treatment.
