Bangladesh PM tells China that Rohingya issue is one of Bangladesh’s top security concerns

The Bangladesh Prime Minister has told his Chinese counterpart that the Rohingya issue remains one of the country's top security concerns, UNB reported.

Prime Minister Tariq Rahman made the remarks during a bilateral meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday, according to Humaiun Kabir, the foreign affairs adviser to the Prime Minister.

"Prime Minister Tariq Rahman raised the Rohingya crisis during his meeting with the Chinese premier," Kabir said. "This is one of Bangladesh's top security concerns, and we must resolve this crisis."

Premier Li assured Bangladesh that Beijing would play an appropriate role in resolving the issue, including facilitating talks with the Myanmar government, the adviser noted.

During the discussions, Prime Minister Rahman highlighted China’s crucial role in addressing the crisis and stressed the importance of both bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

“To resolve this issue, we need to work together through coordinated multilateral efforts," Kabir quoted the Prime Minister as saying. "The Premier of the People’s Republic of China expressed a very positive attitude, stating that China will always support constructive cooperation and assist in discussions with Myanmar.”

The Prime Minister reaffirmed Bangladesh's commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity while pursuing strong diplomatic approaches to address its regional security challenges.

“The government of Bangladesh will continue to maintain a firm foreign policy and security stance on this issue through active diplomacy and dialogue,” Kabir added.

Both leaders agreed that Bangladesh-China relations are entering a new era, paving the way for a comprehensive strategic partnership covering trade, investment, education, culture, and multi-sectoral cooperation.

Kabir concluded that the signing of 13 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) during the visit reflects a mutual commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and underscores the positive momentum generated by the summit.
