At Least Six Displaced Persons Killed in Airstrike on Ponnagyun IDP Camp

At least six internally displaced persons (IDPs) were killed following a military junta airstrike on the Byala IDP camp, located between Thayet Cho and Yoe Ngu villages in Ponnagyun Township, Rakhine (Arakan) State.


Ko Wai Hin Aung, a local writer who assists displaced persons, told Narinjara: "When I inquired with people in the area, they said the death toll might be as high as nine.


Currently, six bodies have been recovered, and they reported that the bodies were completely charred." Local sources also report that approximately ten people were injured, including seven who are in critical condition.


The attack occurred around 5:10 PM today, October 4, when a military jet fighter dropped two bombs on the IDP camp.


The Arakan Army (AA) issued a statement regarding the incident at approximately 7:30 PM.


The AA statement confirmed the timing and location of the attack, adding that two jet fighters conducted consecutive bombing raids on the Yoe Ngu-Byar La IDP camp.


According to the group, numerous homes and shops were destroyed or burned down, six civilians were killed instantly, and several others sustained injuries. The AA noted that further details will be released as they become available.
