The Association of Southeast Asian Nations does not recognize Myanmar’s recently held election, the first since the military seized power in 2021, Philippine Foreign Secretary Theresa Lazaro said on behalf of the regional bloc on Thursday.
Lazaro, speaking to press after the ASEAN foreign ministers’ retreat in Cebu, said the 11-member regional bloc has not endorsed the military junta’s three-phase election held between Dec. 28 and Jan. 25. She also noted that official results have not yet been formally announced.
The Philippines currently chairs the bloc.
