Young activists from Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State, staged a sticker campaign at several locations along the Ayeyarwady River on the morning of June 13 to protest the Myitsone Dam project.
Campaign participants released sticker sheets bearing slogans such as “Permanently Cancel the Myitsone Dam Project,” “Myitsone Is Not for Sale,” “Reject the Myitsone Dam,” “Let the Ayeyarwady Flow Free,” and “Protect the Ayeyarwady,” allowing them to drift downstream.
The campaign aimed to raise awareness and encourage people who find the stickers to join efforts to oppose the Myitsone Dam project and protect the Ayeyarwady River, an activist told MNJ.
“The aim is to build public support against the Myitsone Dam and encourage people to come together to protect the Ayeyarwady,” he said.
The junta is attempting to accelerate the resumption of construction on the Myitsone Dam, a suspended Chinese-backed major infrastructure project. Beyond Myitkyina, it is also intensifying propaganda campaigns in Kachin State towns of Waingmaw, Putao, Danai, and Monghnyin, in an effort to build public support for the project.
U Tun Tun Hlaing, U Mun Rein La, U Naw Htwe, and U Jang Khunt, members of the Ayeyawady Myitsone-Upstream Hydropower Project Support and Cooperation Committee in Kachin State formed by the regime, have been carrying out lobbying campaigns across Kachin State to build support for the project, under the pretext of sharing information about it.
Conversely, widespread opposition exists for the Myitsone Dam project, with many people rejecting it through various protests.
