Voters Stay Home in Elected President U Win Myint’s Old Constituency

Voters in the home constituency of detained President U Win Myint largely stayed away from polling stations on Sunday. Tamwe Township in Yangon is part of Phase 3 of the junta-organized election.
The township saw U Win Myint win landslide victories in both the 2015 and 2020 general elections. But residents said this time voter turnout dropped to a few dozen.
“I checked all six polling stations in the township,” a Tamwe resident told The Irrawaddy. “Some had seven or eight voters, maybe 10 at most. In others I didn’t see a single person casting a ballot. The difference is huge. People aren’t interested.
