Over 1,700 IDPs from 500 households in Shwebo Township urgently need emergency aid

Amid widespread flooding caused by heavy rainfall in Myanmar, urgent emergency assistance is needed for 1,775 internally displaced persons (IDPs) comprising 778 men and 897 women from 534 households in Shwebo Township, Sagaing Region.

A local source told Mizzima that this figure only accounts for those identified within their immediate area, and the actual number of affected people on the ground could be much higher.

“These are IDPs from the western part of Shwebo Township, situated along the Mu River. Currently, there is a severe shortage of clean drinking water and packed meals. While people from flood-free areas are preparing and donating food packets, many villages remain completely submerged, causing immense difficulties,” said a local resident from western Shwebo.

He added that despite ongoing donation efforts, the sheer volume of flood victims has led to aid shortages and distribution gaps in several areas.

“We are struggling to deliver food packets to our villagers. We have been so focused on cooking meals that we haven’t even taken photos of the rising waters, and our phone batteries are completely dead. In areas where food deliveries haven’t reached, people are stranded in chest-deep water,” a flood relief worker said.
