The Military Commission has filed an additional charge under Section 52(a) of the Terrorism Act against Moe San Suu Kyi, the daughter of detained Rakhine Chief Minister U Nyi Pu, according to family sources. She is scheduled to appear in court on 21 August.

“Today, I was allowed to visit her in prison. During the visit, Moe San told me she had been charged again under Section 52(a), this time from Tharyarwaddy,” her elder sister Ma Kyi Kyi Oo told Mizzima.

Moe San Suu Kyi, who is being held at Tharyarwaddy Prison in Bago Region, was reportedly taken from prison on the morning of 7 August for questioning at the Tharyarwaddy Township Administrator’s Office before being returned in the evening.

She was arrested on 9 May 2021 at an apartment in Yangon’s Hledan Township by the military junta. A youth leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), she was later sentenced to a total of six years in prison under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code for “undermining the state’s reputation,” and Section 17(1) of the Unlawful Association Act. On 9 June 2023, she was transferred from Insein Prison in Yangon to Tharyarwaddy Prison.

The latest charge under Section 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law carries a prison term of three to seven years.
