Junta Charged With Human Rights Violations in Push for Myitsone Dam

A Kachin human rights group on Wednesday called for a complete termination of plans for the controversial Myitsone Dam as the military regime pushes to revive the China-backed megaproject in northern Myanmar.

The Kachin State Human Rights Defender Network (KSHRDN) in a statement warned the regime is “employing coercive measures and incentives to threaten and manipulate” residents of the state capital Myintkyina to agree to revive the long-shelved hydropower project.

It demanded the junta end legal threats against local opponents to the project, who were told action would be taken against them if they opposed the dam project “without solid evidence.”
