The Suu Foundation and international legal representatives have issued an urgent appeal for the release of Myanmar’s detained democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who turns 80 today.
According to a joint statement from the Suu Foundation and the law firm Zimeray & Finelle, Suu Kyi is believed to have been injured in the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on 28 March. She remains held incommunicado in “absolute secrecy” in prison, where neither her lawyers nor family have been allowed contact.
The prison where Suu Kyi is confined reportedly sustained structural damage during the earthquake, with sources suggesting she injured her left arm in the incident.
